Thomas Jefferson Bust

 President Thomas Jefferson Bust

Yesterday marked the 224th anniversary of the first State of the Union address. The Constitution of the United States does not detail the means for which the Union must be addressed.

In fact nine years later, dear President Thomas Jefferson sent a letter to congress instead of giving an oration. He felt giving an address was too monarchical. After all one must consider the war that was just fought and the attitudes at the time.

In 1913, President Woodrow  Wilson revived the move to deliver the address before Congress. It was controversial at the time and many presidents after opted to send a letter since.

President Jimmy Carter was the last to send a letter to Congress. With the rise of television, late 20th and 21st century presidents have opted to deliver before Congress through speech.
