January Dream

“Anyone who thinks gardening begins in the spring and ends in the fall is missing the best part of the whole year; for gardening begins in January with a dream.” ~ Josephine Nuese

We shared this quote a while back on our Pinterest and Facebook but some how it escaped the blog. While January is behind us (thank goodness) we still have a ways to go in the Midwest before we see thawing and blooming. That doesn’t mean a girl can’t dream, right? What garden style do you dream of?

Cento Urn On 6' Pool Fountain

Cento Urn On 6′ Pool Fountain

My dream style is one that mixes the deep South (think Charleston and Savannah) with the formality of English gardens. I love the idea of mixing the Massarelli’s  Carnelian Mountain finish Cento Urn with the pop of bright colors from azaleas and roses. I can almost hear the fountain flowing now.

Unfortunately, Spanish moss does not fair well with our deep freezes but I do love the evergreen look of Spanish Moss providing a romantic backdrop.

Dancing Girl of the Wind Bronze Garden Statue

Dancing Girl of the Wind Bronze Garden Statue

Of course my dream garden would not be complete without statuary. The Dancing Girl statue gives my dream garden the formality of the English Garden… despite her free spirit.

My grandmother use to line walkways of her garden with mint, rosemary, lavender and various other herbs. Her beautiful logic was that when one passed through it would create a fragrant journey.  I hope to do the same this year when the frost subsides.

I am also looking forward to the chirping of our winged friends. No perfect garden is complete without a birdbath and birdhouse.

What does your dream garden include? What are you dreaming about the most in your garden? We would love to help you make your dream garden a reality!

Such a sweet little Cherub sculpture sitting on a tree stump gazing lovingly at a bird in its hand. It’s no wonder this statue is so loved. The image of a winged child was prevalent in European Renaissance art. George Washington Bust

George Washington Bust

Tomorrow marks George Washington’s birthday. It is also recognized as Presidents day here in the United States. It serves as day to remember the sacrifice and honor the brave men that have led the nation from the Oval Office. As apparent by the before and after appearances of past presidents, the role as Commander and Chief is not for the faint of heart.

Sure, the day off work is nice but we truly believe it is important to remember and honor these sacrifices of these brave men. Not only remember these men for one day, but year around.  For this reason we are proud to include a wealth of presidential, portrait and full length sculptures.  From the current United States President, Barack Obama to the first United States President, George Washington the United States Presidents are well represented within our gallery. Our busts are museum grade quality, perfect for a professional library or to to exhibit patriotism and deference for history at home. The portrait busts from this gallery assure an honorable display.

Love LoversAhhh Valentines day. What is better than to celebrate a day of love? I know the cynics out there have marked yesterday a Hallmark Holiday. However, Valentine and the associated meaning of romantic love evolved with Chaucer’s poem “Parlement of Foules” in the high Middle Ages, way before the dawn of greeting card companies. The root of Valentines day goes much deeper than giving and receiving cards and other goodies. It is a day celebrating deep love and unbridled passion. In fact I think sculpture captures the love and passion Valentines Day celebrates, perfectly. Below you will find our favorite, most passionate sculptures.

Apollo and Daphne Statue by Gian Lorenzo Bernini

Apollo and Daphne Statue by Gian Lorenzo Bernini

1.) Apollo & Daphne By Gian Lorenzo Bernini Sculpture

Daphne was mountain nymph, with whom Apollo falls in love, having mocked the flimsy darts of Eros compared with his own skill at archery. Eros fires one arrow at him, making him fall passionately in love with Daphne, and another at her which renders her impervious to the god’s persuasion. She flees from him, begging the gods to protect her from his advances, and they turn her into a laurel tree. The myth of Apollo and Daphne is beautiful and captured perfectly by  Gian Lorenzo Bernini’s sculpture.

Cupid and Psyche by Antonio Canova

Cupid and Psyche by Antonio Canova

2.) Cupid and Psyche Bonded Marble Statue by Canova

Canova’s Cupid and Psyche sculpture helped revive classical sculpture in Italy. This depiction of Eros reviving Psyche, who was put to sleep forever by inhaling a magic perfume, is as much an allusion to the legend of Psyche, the immortal soul of Platonic myth, as it is a hymn to love. This statue been called any of these three names: Cupid and Psyche , Eros and Psyche or Love and Psyche. This grand-scale sculpture is imported from Italy and is made of a bonded marble and mounted to a wood base.

Eternal Spring Statue By Rodin

Eternal Spring Statue by Rodin

3.)   Eternal Springtime Statue By Rodin

Auguste Rodin’s sculpture Eternal Springtime is a wonderful example of a neo-classical piece of sculptural art. Rodin, is a French artist, created the piece in the late 1800’s and was roughly twenty six inches high. The sculpture replica of the Eternal Springtime is comprised of two lovers passionately intertwined in each other arms, wrapped in an everlasting embrace. Similar in earlier Classical Greek sculpture, the two lovers are shown in this quality museum statue that shows their passion for each other, thus forming a dynamic composition. The god-like male figure dominates the composition as he forcibly kisses the woman passionately. The woman, in turn, submits to his kiss and succumbs to her innermost desires. The movement of the sculpture suggests that the artist wants to place emphasis on the physical aspect between the two lovers. This is truly a passionate sculpture and will be a great gift or collector piece for your gallery.

I hope these pieces filled you with passion. We are proud to carry many other passionate sculptures within our gallery. Head on over to our website to view our fine gallery of sculptures, fountains and garden accessories.

designer resin, cast stone, wood shelving

So you have established a beautiful collection of artwork and knickknacks that embody memories, sentimentality and your unique taste. What next? How do you showcase them with style and without clutter?

I am guilty of hoarding nice gifts, pictures and artwork in boxes. When we moved to our new house I swore there would be a home for these items, displayed nicely within our new living space. Well, months went by and guess what! They were all still packed away. When the new year rolled around, I made it my resolution to get organized and stylized. Here is my guide to achieving just that.

Four Tier Shelf Step Pedestal 53

Four Tier Shelf Step Pedestal 53″ High

Step 1: Choose Your Shelving

I am a huge fan of tiered shelving. I love the functionality and the clean lines. Now if only my toddler would get the memo it is not a personal latter. Alas that is a different blog for a different day.

It is important that the shelving reflect the space. You will want to consider the lines, color and size of the shelving. For example a tiered shelf would look great in a room with mission or modern decor, complete with clean lines and warm colors.

Step 2: Make it Work For You

I am all about functionality. You will find baskets, baskets and more baskets in my house. On the bottom of my tiered shelves I use baskets to conceal my son’s blocks and Fisher Price Little People. Baskets are my family’s way of stylishly containing organized chaos. Do not be so wrapped up making the shelf stylish that you forget functionality.

If you love wine but have a shelf in the living room, add a bottle or two. This adds a personal touch to the space but also creates a nice space to store that precious vino. I caution you though, do not overwhelm the shelf with too much clutter. There is definitely a fine balance between functionality and too much stuff. The size of your shelf will determine that too.

Step 3: Remember Your Shapes

To create a stylized shelf it is wise to create visual triangles that draw the eye where you want it to go. Do this by stacking, leaning, layering and grouping your items.

I have collected cool hardbound books over time. I stacked them in the shape of a pyramid instead of the traditional library style to showcase the unique binding and tie in the colors with other items on my shelf.

I also lean and layer photos to create depth Grouping photos and other items of similar color is another great way to to draw the eye.

Mission Shelf Wall Bracket 30

Mission Shelf Wall Bracket 30″ Long

Step 4: Go Simple

When considering your color palate of the shelf, its contents and background it is best to go simple. I created a background color with items in mind  to “pop” against the background. I love the look of marble against a background of purples and reds. Another favorite of mine is cream with a pop of green. If you choose a pattern for the background it is best to keep the contents of the shelf simple so not to overwhelm the space.

I hope this provided some inspiration to get stylizing and organized! We are proud to carry many options of shelving, benches and tables. Head on over to our website to view our fine gallery of shelving, benches and tables.

Faces of Amedeo Modigliani

The Faces of Amedeo Modigliani

Tête By Modigliani

Tête By Modigliani

Amedeo Modigliani was an Italian painter and sculptor. Modigliani led a short life with great artistic output. He considered himself a sculptor foremost and painter secondary.

However, towards the end of his life Modigliani painted exclusively. His move away from painting was fueled by failing health and decreasing supplies from the outbreak of World War I.

Posthumously, Modigliani’s sculpture  Tête, is the fifth highest grossing sculpture of all time. Modigliani was highly motivated and produced many pieces. Most of which he destroyed himself, considering the work inferior.

His infamous portraits and nudes are characterized by long faces and elongated necks. Modigliani’s subjects were mostly women. Of the few male portraits Modigliani painted, one was of the famous painter Pablo Picasso. Other subjects painted and sculpted by Modigliani include his lovers and friends.

Karyiatid Female Nude Statue Inspired by Modigliani

Karyiatid Female Nude Statue Inspired by Modigliani

Modigliani’s nude artwork was highly controversial at the time. In Paris, his only solo art showing, was temporarily shut down upon opening. He was forced to remove the nude artwork from the gallery’s street front window to reopen the gallery.

Modigliani’s fascination with the classical African and Etruscan artwork, passion for sculpture and distinct style transcend into his artwork. All of these factors make it difficult to pinpoint Modigliani into one genre among his peers.

We are proud to carry many reproductions of Modigliani’s sculptures and paintings. Head on over to our website to view our fine gallery of Modigliani sculptures.

Cathedral Hands By Auguste Rodin Statue

Cathedral Hands By Auguste Rodin Statue

Cathedral Hands By Auguste Rodin Statue

Cathedral Hands By Auguste Rodin Statue is a wonderful wedding gift. This sculpture of the Cathedral has a texture on the surface of the hand and is more true to the original Rodin sculpture of the Cathedral. The Cathedral by Auguste Rodin (1840-1917).  To Rodin, two hands symbolized a lover’s union every bit as powerfully as his more explicit sculptures did. Rodin’s allegory hinted at the scarcity of the sexual in the pieces name of  The Cathedral. This wonderful Rodin statue is composed of alabaster dust mixed with a durable binding compound, each detail is finished with care by the artisans of Italy’s Egregia Workshop.

The Love & Lovers and Auguste Rodin collections will be on sale through the month of February. If ordering for Valentines Day we recommend ordering soon so that your gift arrives in time for the special day.
