Nature’s Sanctuary Saint Francis Garden Statue

October 4th marked the feast day of Saint Francis of Assisi. According to the Catholic Church this day marks the day of Saint Francis’ stigmata and thus celebrated as his feast day. Furthermore, Saint Francis is the Patron Saint of animals and the environment. This stems from his teaching and preaching of God’s creation of a good and beautiful earth. Saint Francis derived from scripture that man and animals are stewards of the earth and it is man’s duty to act as protector.

Many legends also paint Assisi as an animal lover as well.  In sculpture, Saint Francis is often depicted with a bird. This comes from the legend, while Saint Francis was away with fellow travelers, they came upon a place where birds filled the trees. Francis told his friends to “wait for me while I go to preach to my sisters the birds.” According to this legend no bird flew away, they surrounded Assisi, and became enthralled with his voice.

In addition to legends, Saint Francis left his mark on the church by founding the Franciscan Order. Through this order, Saint Francis set up the first nativity scene during a Christmas celebration. This would be a tradition that would hold till this day. The Catholic Church’s current Pope also chose Francis as his papal name in honor of Saint Francis.
