• ImageStatue of Liberty was formally known as Liberty Enlightening the World, and more commonly known as, Lady Liberty. This sculptural structure located on Liberty Island in New York Harbor, presented to the United States on the centennial of the signing of the American Declaration of Independence which was a gift from France. It was designed by Frederic Bartholdi and its green coloring from patination of the outer copper covering that had turned this color over time due to the elements. The statue is world-renowned for being the first thing sea-borne visitors, immigrants, and returning Americans see upon entering New York Harbor and has been known as a beacon of freedom to much of the world. My mother and father came from Italy on a cruise liner in the 1950, and my mother always said she knew she had made it to American when she saw the Statue of Liberty. It took two weeks for them to arrive in American. They came with two trunks and a few dollars in their pockets. My father was going into the statuary business with my uncle. So they pass the Statue of Liberty and arrived in New York. On their arrival they hand never seen slush on the ground as they caught a cab to the train station. My mother says she had never seen such bad weather and she only was wearing sandals as they arrived. But she recalls the Statue of Liberty as she made it to America. What a way for a family arriving in New York as statue makers and now see this larger than life statue in front of them. Boy they must had thought America loves statues. Our family is third generation statue makers and we continue on with this tradition. The interior of the Statue is closed for renovation through at least the end of 2012. Both Liberty Island and Ellis Island will remain open, and views of the Statue of Liberty will remain unobstructed. Only the interior of the Statue is closed so you can still take ferry rides to the sculpture. Cost of this renovation that will cost about $27.25 million, wow I wish we could have done this renovation. I not sure what they need to do but that is costly renovation of the statue. I have been there twice but never made it up the statue. The wait was to long, but I enjoyed the view when we visited the Statue.Fact about the statue of liberty Height of the Statue from her heel to the top of her head is 111 feet, 6 inches tall. Total overall height from the base of the pedestal foundation to the tip of the torch is 305 feet, 6 inches tall. There are seven rays on her crown, one for each of the seven continents, each measuring up to 9 feet in length and weighing as much as 150 pounds, wow that has to be one heavy statue which is 450,000 pounds. During a restoration completed in 1986, the new torch was carefully covered with thin sheets of 24k gold. Wow maybe that is why the renovation cost so much today.
